ANU operates a University-wide network infrastructure (the Integrated
Communications Network or ICN). This infrastructure includes a physical Local
Area Network, a Wireless Network and a number of converged network applications
and services, such as the phones and desktop video conferencing. Access to the
University Network brings with it a range of obligations and responsibilities
and these are covered in the Network Access Policy.
Members of the University community can access the ICN using network devices
managed by the University (e.g., Staff computers and computers in the
Information Commons). Devices that are not under the control of ANU may connect
to the ICN via the University’s authentication and access gateways (e.g., you
can connect your personal computer to the ANU wireless network by logging in
with your UniID and password).
The University is responsible for:
- Providing authorised users with network access
- Securing the ICN against network security threats, including denial of
service attacks, viruses, worms and Trojans
- Ensuring that the University meets its obligations under its Access
Agreement with AARNet Pty Ltd
Individual users are expected to:
- Respect the rights of other users and the integrity of the network
- Not connect unauthorised devices (in particular users must not extend their
local network with hubs, switches or wireless LAN access points)
- Not use communications services for a purpose that contravenes the
Acceptable Use of the Information Infrastructure Policy
