Whether you are working from a computer at home or on your
laptop on campus, it is very important to keep your computer secure. This means
ensuring you have up-to-date virus protection, a firewall installed on your
computer, and that you take advantage of freely available software and
information that you can access from the ANU IT Security website.
Software to Protect your Laptop
When you use your personal computer on the ANU Network, you are responsible for
installing up to date anti-virus software (e.g., Sophos) and some form of
personal firewall (e.g., ZoneAlarm) on your laptop. You can download Sophus
anti-virus software for free
from ANU. To download this software, go to http://security.anu.edu.au
Laptop Locks
It is strongly recommended that you have a laptop lock to prevent your laptop
from being stolen. A small number of laptop locks are available for short-term
loan from the Circulation Desk in each Library location. As with any library
loan, penalities will apply for their late return.
When used correctly a laptop lock prevents your laptop from being stolen. The
lock consists of a strong metal cable and a Key, which connects the laptop to
the cable. In order to secure your laptop the cable must be connected to a
secure, fixed object. Looping the cable around the leg of a table or chair will
not necessarily prevent theft.
