Updates and patches for software

Computer operating systems (like Windows XP or Mac OS X) require hugely complicated software programs in order to function properly, and sometimes, even with extensive testing, tiny mistakes are included in the ‘final’ product.

Unfortunately, computer hackers like to take advantage of these opportunities (see Virus protection and Firewalls).  Fortunately, both Microsoft and Apple regularly release software updates and patches to address these issues.

It is highly recommended that you take advantage of the automatic software update services for Windows and Mac provided to all members of the ANU community.  This will help to ensure that your home computer or laptop remains secure.  To access the automatic software update service go to: http://security.anu.edu.au/sus/index.html.
