WebCT

Every course offered at the ANU has a “WebCT” site – WebCT stands for Web Course Tools.   This online course management system is an essential element of the teaching and learning environment at the ANU.  Your course sites may be accessed from any computer, on or off campus, with a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.  Lecturers’ use of WebCT and other online facilities ranges from presenting basic administrative information, through resources and tools to complement your other course activities, to providing a detailed online learning environment.

How Do I Log In to WebCT?

Using a web browser, go to the ANU online learning site at http://webct.anu.edu.au, enter your UniID and password and click Login. There is also a direct link to WebCT from all Information Commons computers, and a WebCT link in the Resources list in the left hand menu of the ANU Student and Staff Home Pages.

All Information Commons computers are equipped with web browsers that are compatible with WebCT. If you intend to use WebCT from elsewhere, use the Check Browser link in the upper right corner of your myWebCT page to see if your browser is compatible and follow the advice for best performance.

What Will I see After I Log On to WebCT?

After you log on you’ll be taken to a page called myWebCT. As its name suggests, myWebCT is your own personal homepage for online learning.

You should regularly check the Announcements area on the right hand side of your myWebCT page. Notices about issues with the WebCT service will be posted here.

On the left hand side you should see links to the WebCT sites for all courses in which you are enrolled or for which you are the course convenor. For students, the list of courses you see is automatically generated from your enrolment information. If you change your enrolment (using ISIS), then the changes may not be reflected in your myWebCT until the next day. If your enrolment details in WebCT are not correct, please log this with the online Help Desk at http://doihelpdesk.anu.edu.au. You may see a message like “You have not yet added any courses to myWebCT.”  This suggests that either your enrolment information has not yet been fully processed, or none of your courses have made their WebCT sites available yet – please check again in a few days or after the start of semester.  Students are not able to add themselves to WebCT course sites at ANU.

When you click on the link to a particular course you will jump to the homepage for the course.

From inside any course, you’ll also have a link in the top right corner back to your myWebCT page and to WebCT Help.  When using WebCT, avoid using the “Back” button on your browser, use the breadcrumbs at the top of the page instead.

Logging out of WebCT

If you log in to WebCT from any public computer, it is very important that you also log out when you have finished. Otherwise, the next person who comes along will be able to access your learning materials and private information such as your grades, and even impersonate you in online discussions. Do not simply close the web browser window to get out of WebCT. You should use the Log Out button at the top right of the WebCT screen of any course, or from your myWebCT area.
