Update, Semester 2, 2008

Usage guidelines

Usage guidelines of chargeable Commodity Internet traffic are 10MB per day. Occasional peaks above this limit will be tolerated.

Usage of wireless chargeable internet traffic for the past days can be looked up at:
https://olams.anu.edu.au

Starting from July 1st, access speeds have been increased substantially:

  • Access speed to the Commodity Internet has been increased to 256kbps – about the speed of a basic home ADSL connection.
  • Access speed to on-campus traffic and On-Net traffic has not changed and remains at the full wireless bandwidth, except for Wireless Access Points in Chancelry, CSIT and MSO, which operate at 256kbps for Commodity and On-Net traffic.

Note: While the improved access speed to the Commodity Internet will speed up access times, users are reminded that this wireless service is part of the Information Commons and so downloads are limited to a self-managed quota.    Excessive and persistent downloads by individuals will be regarded as an abuse of the University’s Information Infrastructure and a warning of abuse will be issued followed by access sanctions which may limit or remove wireless access.  (Refer to the University Policy: "Acceptable Use of Communication and Information Systems").

Improving Access in Hotspots:

Wireless is a contended service, meaning that the more people using it the slower the average speed. By deploying more access points in congested areas (wireless hotspots) we will improve access speeds for users in that area.

In the first half of Semester 1 this year some 30 additional Wireless Access Points were deployed into Library hotspots resulting in improved access, and there are now some 150 Wireless Access Points deployed across campus.

Through Semester 2, other hotspots will be identified and, where sustained high usage can be demonstrated, additional Wireless Access Points will be deployed. If you believe a particular area is congested, or there is a lack of wireless coverage, please send us a ticket via the DOI Help Desk system for consideration for an additional Wireless Access Point.

Note:  extending wireless access into student accommodation rooms is not part of the present ANU wireless service (since the rooms are not part of the Information Commons) and adding Wireless Access Points to “accommodation hotspots” will not be part of the service improvement at this time.
