What Do I Need?

Hardware

Laptop or PDA with built-in 802.11b or 802.11g wireless capability
Laptop and plug-in 802.11b or 802.11g wireless card.

Software

Wireless drivers for your operating system.
Your wireless network connection should be configured to obtain an IP address and DNS server address automatically.
We strongly recommend that you install some form of personal firewall (eg ZoneAlarm), and up to date anti-virus software (eg Sophos).

Some areas have walk-up ports that you can connect to with a normal network interface if you don't have wireless capability.

Associate to a Wireless Access Point

The ANU general access wireless network uses an SSID of "ANU-Access".
Wireless Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is not enabled.

Once associated, start a web browser and go to any web page.
Your browser will connect to the secure ANU Wireless logon page
Enter your University ID and password (ISIS / HORUS) and select the Login User button.
If your login is successful, you will be redirected to your web page. If you have javascript enabled on your browser, a logout window will pop-up.

If you do not see the logon page, try turning off any web proxy settings in your browser.

What can I do?

Once you have logged in, you will be able to access a limited set of services depending on your university affiliation. These services include:
Web (HTTP, HTTPS), Email (IMAPS, POPS, SMTP), and terminal sessions (SSH).

See the access policy page for more details.

You must enable secure connections (SSL) for IMAP and POP email clients. We also strongly recommend that use use secure connections (HTTPS) where possible when accessing web sites that require you to log in. When using the wireless network there is a risk that unencrypted passwords or other private information may be viewable to others.

See the wireless security recommendations page for more details.

How do I log off?

When you have finished your session, you can disconnect from the network by logging off.
If you have a javascript enabled browser, a logout window will have popped-up when you logged in. Select the Logoff button to disconnect.
Otherwise, you can go to the special address of 1.1.1.1 in your browser to return to the login screen where you can select the Logoff button to disconnect.
If you don't log off, your session will time out and you will be logged off around five minutes after you disassociate from the wireless network.
