Information Services@ANU > Internet Domain Name Registration (not anu.edu.au) RetiredThis document has been retired. Internet Domain Name Registration (not anu.edu.au)All websites on the internet require a domain name in order to be accessed by other web users. Hosts on the internet communicate with each other using a unique number known as an Internet Protocol address (IP Address or just IP). The IP is in the form of 192.168.243.132 which is hard for humans to remember. Therefore domain names are used instead. Domain names are in the form of www.YourNameHere.com and are easier for people to remember. Computers still require the IP to communicate and therefore a system is in place to translate domain names to IP addresses and vice versa. This system is globally distributed and is known as the Domain Name System (DNS) The DNS is structured as an hierarchy of domain names consisting of the world wide Top Level Domains (TLD eg .com, .org .edu etc) followed by Second Level Domains (2LD eg .com.au, .org.au, .edu.au etc) then Third Level Domains (3LD eg anu.edu.au). Domain names are unique and therefore require registration which is done through accredited Registrars. The ANU uses Melbourne IT as its Registrar. At the ANU Domain name registration is undertaken through Networks and Communications to insure controlled use of the university’s legal identifiers, appropriate domain naming and acceptance of relevant university and regulatory policies. If you wish to apply for a domain name, you must apply through Networks and Communications. General domain naming policy guidelines to be noted:
