Local Area Firewall Settings (for Skype) - to be implemented by LITSS

The following is a mandatory requirement to be implemented on local areas to prevent Skype supernodes on the University’s network.

Note 1: These local area firewall settings will not stop Skype itself from working, however, they will prevent local machines with Skype from becoming supernodes.

If the local area does not yet have a firewall, contact NetComms for firewall options and standard configurations.

To prevent a Skype node from becoming a supernode, the local area firewall needs to block access to its TCP port 80 and 443 (https).

Note 2: The University does not regard it as sufficient for only host based firewalls on individual computers to have these blocks. Access control must be at the subnet level to ensure adequate University protection for its contractual obligations.
